The county chose the Tennessee Advanced Communications Network used by the Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency.
Motorola was chosen to help establish the communications infrastructure. The new system will include three additional antennas to cover 98 percent of the county where mountains hinder radio signals.
"In case an officer was to get in trouble get in a fight or a bad situation and he can't get out on his radio to call for help, that's one of the main reasons, that we're trying to go with this new system to be able to have better coverage area," Carter County EMA Director Billy Harrell said. These upgrades will include fire departments within the county as well as the EMA and Roan Mountain State Park.
