Some work is planned on Arlington Boulevard, long a trouble flooding spot in Huntington, that officials hope will alleviate some of the flooding issues.
Arlington Boulevard between Larkspur Drive and U.S. 60 will be closed intermittently between now and Aug. 23, so that the West Virginia Division of Highways can repair a culvert/pipe that carries stormwater to the Guyandotte River, Bryan Chambers, spokesperson for the city of Huntington, said.
Chambers said this is expected to reduce flooding in the area.
Arlington Boulevard is a well-known visible flood plain, an almost guaranteed spot for high water when it rains.
Resident Jerry Burns told Eyewitness News in March that his family has owned a home there for two years. He said every time there is any kind
of significant rain, residents must find an alternative way out.
In April, Brian Bracey, the executive director of the Huntington Water Quality Board, said the city's storm water utility was able to secure a grant from the Division of Highways to conduct a hydrology study on the area. It began the process for engineers to look at ways to improve the flow of water in this area to the Guyandotte River.
