Deputy State Fire Marshals are investigating the cause of a late afternoon fire that took the life of a Wicomico County man on Monday, Aug. 15 on Johnson Road in Salisbury.

Officials said that shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Monday afternoon, firefighters from the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Company and nearby agencies responded to the reported fire that was reported by a neighbor.

Upon arrival, firefighters said that encountered “severe fire conditions throughout the entire structure,” and it took upwards of an hour to bring the two-alarm blaze under control, according to officials.

A woman was able to escape the home and was assisted away from the area by Good Samaritans in the area. She suffered “significant burns” and was flown to Bayview Burn Center in Baltimore by a Maryland State Police helicopter.

Further investigation led firefighters to locate a second man who was dead inside the home. His remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore to allow for positive identification and to determine the exact cause of death.

Investigators have not released the ID of either victim.

The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation.

Bystanders did not report hearing smoke alarms in the home prior to the arrival of the fire department, investigators noted that the damages are estimated to be approximately $225,000.
