Portland police have arrested two individuals accused of stealing copper from the new homeless shelter that’s under construction on Riverside Street.

A resident called police are spotting two individuals exit the construction site just after 11 p.m. Monday.

When officers arrived, they heard noises coming from a nearby public trail.

That is where officers spotted two Portland residents pushing wheelbarrows loaded with copper.

According to a press release from the Portland Police Dept., the suspects were identified as Edward Demers and Chayne Markie.

A short time later, an officer checking nearby businesses located a pickup truck belonging to Markie in the parking lot of Waste Management.

The release said the bed of the pickup contained several battery powered tools that belonged to a company working at the construction site.

The stolen copper was valued at more that $20,000 and the tools were estimated to be worth $8,500.

Both suspects were charged with burglary, felony theft, criminal mischief and refusal to submit to arrest.

Markie was also charged with violation of conditions of release.

The two were taken to Cumberland County Jail.
