South Portland community members helped raise nearly $150,000 for the project

Work will soon start on a new skate park in South Portland.City leaders say they have raised all the money needed. Community members drove the fundraising effort, collecting $145,000."We had a volunteer skate park committee that's kind of been pushing this thing, helping with it since 2018. They've all played a huge role in getting to where we are now, and being able to put this park in the ground is a credit to all of them and all the work they've put in," said Anthony Johnson, Deputy Director of South Portland Parks, Recreation & Waterfront.The new 10,000-square-foot concrete park will be in a corner of High School Park on Evans Street and will provide a safe place for kids to stay active outside. It will have features for beginners and advanced skaters."It's going to have a bowl at the end of it. It's going to have a little area as you come in on the right-hand side for like just a flat area for people to do tricks and whatnot," said Johnson.The goal is to break ground by the end of August and have the park finished by early November.The community has talked about building a skate park for nearly two decades, but plans never came together until now.
