5-year-old child shot, killed in Smyrna

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WSMV) - A 5-year-old boy is dead after he was shot at Lee Victory Recreation Park in Smyrna Monday night.

The child was taken to the emergency room at Stonecrest Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. near the basketball courts.

Based on multiple witness statements and evidence at the scene, the shooting appeared to be an accident, according to Smyrna officials.

Smyrna officials determined that the firearm belonged to the dad and that the child retrieved the firearm from the father’s backpack.

Officials said the gun believed to be involved was recovered at the scene. The investigation is still ongoing.
