The new Toyota GR Supra is a taut, fast sports car with performance and racing pedigree. However, it’s the result of a collaboration with BMW to build a modern interpretation of the JDM classic and the latest BMW Z4 roadster. Whether you love that or not, the cars are undeniably siblings. Still, the Toyota GR Supra has at least three advantages over the 2022 BMW Z4.

How heavy is the 2023 Toyota GR Supra?

The outgoing 2022 Toyota GR Supra 2.0L with an automatic transmission weighs 3,181 lbs. That’s pretty light, and rightfully so for a sharp sports coupe. However, the Supra gets heavier with the addition of the much more powerful 3.0L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine. The 2022 GR Supra 3.0 Premium weighs around 3,400 lbs, meaning it weighs around 219 lbs more than its smaller-engine counterpart.

However, the convertible BMW is a bit heavier than its Toyota sibling. The turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder-powered Z4 sDrive30i weighs 3,287 lbs. That makes the bottom-tier Z4 heavier than a comparable 2.0L GR Supra. Also, the 3.0L six-cylinder Z4 sDriveM40i is 3,457 lbs. That’s not much more than the Toyota Supra 3.0L, but every pound counts when it comes to performance.

How much does a BMW Z4 cost?

The 2022 BMW Z4 sDrive30i has a starting price of $50,895. That means getting your hands on the entry-level BMW roadster for under $50,000 isn’t an option. However, if your budget is $50,000, you can opt for the entry-level 2022 Toyota GR Supra. The four-cylinder Supra demands a starting price of $44,635.

The higher-trim 3.0L-powered Z4 M40i is even pricier. According to TrueCar, the M40i has a starting price of $64,695, making it much more expensive than the GR Supra 3.0. A comparable Supra is $52,985. That price gap is arguably the most significant advantage the Toyota sports car has over the BMW roadster.

When can you order a manual Supra?

The Toyota performance fans who were profoundly disappointed by the lack of a manual transmission can rejoice in the upcoming three-pedal setup. Toyota confirmed a manual Supra is on the way. The 2023 Toyota GR Supra will offer a manual transmission, and when it goes on sale, so too will the stick. That’s great news for fans who want more driving sensation out of their Toyota sports car.

Unfortunately for BMW fans, the Z4 doesn’t offer a manual transmission. It’s also unlikely that BMW will put one into the 2023 model. Furthermore, given its falling popularity, BMW might electrify or discontinue the Z4 in the coming years.

Should you buy the Toyota Supra?

If you want a sharp sports car for considerably less than BMW’s roadster, consider the Toyota GR Supra 2.0. However, the 3.0L Supra is a six-cylinder track star that will hit sixty in less than four seconds. Still, the upcoming 400-horsepower retro-styled Nissan Z Performance will challenge the Supra’s place in the industry. The Z is worth considering if you’re in the market for a sports coupe, and it will offer a manual transmission, too.

Still, neither the Supra nor the Z offers a convertible top. So, consider the BMW Z4 or a Porsche Boxster if you want a roadster. Scroll down to the following article to read more about sports cars!
