RIGHT NOW. POLK COUNTY DETECTIVES ARE ONE STEP CLOSER TONIGHT TO SOLVING ITEM ONE HOMICIDE. ONLY KCCI WAS THERE WHEN A MAN WHO INVESTED GATOR SAY HAS CRITICAL INFORMATION IN THE CASE TURNED HIMSELF IN. DEPUTIES HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR COURTNEY SMITH SINCE LAST TUESDAY. KCCI LAUREN JOHNSON IS LIVE AT THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE WHERE HE TURNED HIMSELF IN TODAY. LAUREN, WHAT PART DOES HE PLAY IN THIS INVESTIGATION. COURTNEY SMITH IS A PERSON OF INTEREST IN A HOMICIDE THAT HAPPENED ON AUGUST 6TH. INVESTIGATORS FOUND SCOTT CRAIN DEAD FROM A GUNSHOT WOUND AT A HOME ON THE NORTH SIDE OF DES MOINES, JUST OUTSIDE OF CITY LIMITS. I JUST WANTED TO TURN MYSELF IN AND MAKE SURE THAT THE PUBLIC WERE SAFE. I’M HERE TO CLEAR MY NAME. IT’S NOT REALLY. HE SAID, COME. SMITH WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY EARLIER THIS AFTERNOON, MORE THAN A WEEK AFTER THE HOMICIDE. POLICE SAY SMITH WAS CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE HOMICIDE WHEN IT HAPPENED THAT DEPUTIES WANT TO TALK WITH HIM AND THEY THINK HE HAS ENOUGH INFORMATION THAT WOULD BE PERTINENT ENOUGH TO SHARE WITH INVESTIGATORS. SMITH TOLD ME HE’S MAINTAINING HIS INNOCENCE. SO DID YOU DO THE THING? TURN YOURSELF IN FOR. I CAN’T ANSWER THAT QUESTION UP TO MY ATTORNEY. IF I DO. LAST WEEK I SPOKE WITH COURTNEY SMITH’S SISTER, ELECTRA SMITH, WHO WAS ARGUING HER WAS URGING HER BROTHER TO TURN HIMSELF IN TO AUTHORITIES. SHE SAYS HE IS ALSO INNOCENT AND SHE SHARED THAT THINGS HAD GROWN HOSTILE BETWEEN THE TWO MEN BEFORE CRANE’S DEATH. THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE TOLD KCCI THEY HAVE RESPONDED TO A DISPUTE AT THE RESIDENCE WITHIN THE LAST SIX MONTHS. I KNOW THAT HE’S SCARED. I KNOW THAT HE DOESN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO. AND I’M I’M HERE TO HELP HIM GET THROUGH THIS, TO BE A PERSON OF INTEREST OR INVOLVED IN A SITUATION LIKE THIS. HE HAD TO FEEL LIKE HE WAS IN FEAR OF HIS LIFE. NOW, AT THIS TIME, COURTNEY SMITH IS NOT FACING ANY CHARGES. HE’S IN CUSTODY FOR A MATERIAL WITNESS WARRANT AND WE DID SPEAK TO THE HOMICIDE VICTIM’S FAMILY. THEY DID NOT WANT TO DO AN INTERVIEW WITH KCCI AT THIS TIME. REPORTING LIVE AT THE POLK COUNTY SHERIFF’

Thirty-eight-year-old Courtney Smith, a person of interest in an Aug. 6 homicide, has turned himself in.Investigators found 51-year-old Scott Crane dead on Aug. 6. Crane suffered a gunshot wound.The investigation led to a material witness warrant for Smith.Smith was taken into custody on Monday afternoon, more than a week after the homicide. Police believe Smith was close enough to the homicide when it happened, that deputies want to talk with him. Smith tells KCCI that he is maintaining his innocence.At this time, Smith isn't facing any charges. The investigation remains open.This is a developing story.
