The 2022 Acura MDX vs. 2022 Genesis GV80: which is safer?

If safety is your number one priority, you’ll be happy to know that both the 2022 Acura MDX and 2022 Genesis GV80 are Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick+ winners. To win the coveted Top Safety Pick+ award, a vehicle must have good crash test ratings in all major categories. It also has to have superior or advanced safety systems and acceptable or good headlights standard on all models.

An IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award is important because it helps consumers choose the safest SUVs. By testing vehicles and sharing the results, the IIHS allows consumers to be more aware of potential issues with their vehicles, and car manufacturers have more accountability. The IIHS’ tests have evolved to keep pushing safety standards higher, which is important for both car buyers and manufacturers.

Although a vehicle winning the Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award is obviously a positive when you’re car shopping, not all vehicles with these awards are equal. The IIHS says, “These awards identify the best vehicle choices for safety within size categories during a given year. Larger, heavier vehicles generally afford more protection than smaller, lighter ones. Thus, a small car that qualifies for an award might not protect its occupants as well as a bigger vehicle that doesn’t earn the award.”

Both the Acura MDX and Genesis GV80 are loaded with features

The 2022 Acura MDX starts even its base model with nice features like a panoramic sunroof, simulated leather, and heated front seats, according to Edmunds. It also has updated technology like a 12.3-inch central display, a 9-speaker sound system, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. In addition, the MDX has a wireless charging pad, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and USB ports in the first and second rows. The base model also comes with Acura’s suite of important safety features.

Likewise, the 2022 Genesis GV80 is packed with features. It has 19-inch wheels, a power liftgate, and heated front seats with simulated leather upholstery. There’s also a 14.5-inch touchscreen infotainment screen with navigation, and a 12-speaker sound system that’s compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. In addition, it comes with a panoramic sunroof, ventilated seats, and a heated steering wheel. It also has a wireless device charger and a digital key.

The MDX is cheaper than the GV80

The 2022 Genesis GV80 2.5T starts at $56,645, and it comes with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 Acura MDX price starts at $49,195 for the base model. You’ll get a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 290 ho and 267 lb-ft of torque.

That’s a fairly decent price difference. If only the 2022 Acura MDX is in your budget, it makes the decision a lot easier. If, however, you could easily afford either, you may be happier with the Genesis GV80 and its plethora of added features. However, the MDX offers safety, style, and essential features in a cheaper package, and that makes it the better buy.
