A Lawrence man was charged Monday in Douglas County District Court with aggravated assault and other crimes after allegedly threatening a woman with a hammer.

Jacob Michael Goans, 29, is charged with one felony count of aggravated assault, one felony count of aggravated domestic battery by choking, one felony count of criminal threat and one misdemeanor count of domestic battery, according to charging documents.

Goans was arrested at his home around 9 p.m. Saturday by Lawrence police, according to the Douglas County Jail booking log. Lawrence Police Department spokesperson Laura McCabe said that no one was injured during the incident. She declined to comment further on the arrest, citing the domestic nature of the incident.

Charging documents allege that Goans choked a woman and threatened her with a hammer before police were called to his home.

At his first appearance on Monday, Goans was appointed defense attorney Dakota Loomis, and Judge Blake Glover set a $6,000 own-recognizance bond. Goans was later released with a do-not-return order to the location of the incident. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 31.
