Retired CPD officer wounded in Lawndale after robbery attempt leads to shootout with suspect: Police

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) - A retired Chicago police officer is recovering Monday after being wounded during a robbery attempt in the Lawndale neighborhood.

The 59-year-old former officer was on Grenshaw near Independence late Sunday afternoon when at least one gunman approached and announced a robbery. Police said both men pulled out handguns and exchanged gunfire on the street before the victim was struck in the arm. He’s at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Reports identify the victim as a retired Chicago officer – the name has not been released -- and that he may have been shot twice.

The gunman may have also been wounded in the gun battle, as police were trying to track him down at area hospitals.
