Penn State football news, notes, and updates for Aug. 15 include the latest Lions roster update plus an analyst’s take on the program in 2022.

It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a roster update.

Running back Caziah Holmes is no longer listed on the Penn State roster.

A former On3 Consensus four-star recruit, the Florida native carried 51 times for 227 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman in 2020. However, he surprisingly redshirted last season after only carrying five times for 27 yards. The Lions have a stacked depth chart at running back, which led many to think that the third-year player wouldn’t have a large role this fall. However, his decision to leave the team during preseason camp is surprising.

It is unclear as of Monday morning if Holmes has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

In other news, a top betting analyst told Sports Illustrated that Penn State is being slept on in 2022.

“When I look at all the Big Ten quarterbacks, and I love to evaluate quarterback talent, I think Sean Clifford could be the No. 2 quarterback in the Big Ten,” VSIN’s Matt Youmans said.

“If Clifford doesn’t go down in that Iowa game [last year], they win that game, and there’s no freaking way they lose to Illinois, and that’s where everything just went south. That Penn State team was a lot better than that 7-6 record indicated, and that’s why I think that some people are sleeping on Penn State a little bit this season. A lot of people don’t have as high an opinion of Clifford as I do, and maybe that’s why I think you can find a little bit more value in a Penn State team than the oddsmakers and the bettors think at this point.”

Quote of the day

“Obviously, he’s had tremendous production, as we all know, and tremendous production against Big Ten opponents. I think it’s going to translate very well for him because I do think that this spring and summer were really good for him in terms of getting a little bit stronger and a little bit faster.”
