A makeshift memorial marks the spot where 17 people were hurt when a car plowed into them around 6:15 Saturday evening in Berwick.
Maureen Vassallo and Barbara Barbusca were vendors at a community event at the Intoxicolgy Department Bar and Restaurant benefiting the three survivors of that fatal fire in Nescopeck back on August 5th.
They eyewitnessed the tragedy take place.
"Everybody is still in shock really (yeah) It will last for another couple of days and then it will start with people are going to be able to accept that it happened at all. You know there are times when I still can't believe it happened and I was here. And from there we'll get stronger," said Maureen Vassallo.
The driver of that car who authorities identified as 24-year-old Adrian Oswaldo Sura Reyes of Nescopeck then took off.
Minutes later, PSP Troopers were called to the rear of 939 Ridgewood Avenue in Nescopeck where they found 56-year-old Rosa Reyes dead and Sura Reyes in custody by Nescopeck Borough Police.
The Luzerne County Coroners' Office says Reyes died from multiple traumatic injuries suffered after she was hit by a car and allegedly physically attacked with a hammer.
Her death has been ruled a homicide.
Of the 17 that were hurt, we're told 12 were taken to Geisinger Danville, three to Geisinger Wyoming Valley, one to Berwick Hospital and the other to Geisinger Bloomsburg.
"This is a complete tragedy in a community where there has already been tragedy. We are going to do our job to the best of our abilities to conduct a thorough investigation not only for the families but the community members. They're already hurting and if there's anything we can do to help those families beyond our investigation we absolutely will do it," said Trooper Anthony Petroski.
The owner of the Intoxicology Department Bar and Restuarant saying on Facebook they will be closed until further notice and are asking for privacy while they grieve and process what happened.
"We all came together cause we wanted to raise as much as we could (to help this family) to help this family and he had to come and he wrecked the whole thing. Yeah it had been a beautiful day," said Vassallo.
We're told both the Luzerne and Columbia County District Attorneys are working together to prosecute this case.
Pennsylvania State Police are asking anyone with video surveillance or still photos of either incident to contact either PSP Bloomsburg at 570-387-4261 or PSP Shickshinny at 570-542-4117.
