APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Wisconsin Department of Justice continues to investigate a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in Appleton Friday night.
Police say they responded to the 1500 block of Birchwood Avenue, for a domestic disturbance regarding a man who was armed with a handgun.
“We were sitting watching TV and we heard what sounded like a gunshot,” said Kelly Minks, who lives across the street from where police shot a man Friday night.
“My roommate went outside and looked around, no big deal,” said Minks.
At 7:22 p.m., police arrived on scene.
“About five to six minutes later, he looked out the window and all the cops were all over; in our driveway, running across our lawn,” said Minks.
Officers say they tried to negotiate with the man, but, at 8:04 p.m., they fired their weapons, hitting him.
Residents in Appleton received a notification on their phones seven minutes later telling them to stay inside and away from windows.
The man was taken to the hospital, where we was later pronounced dead.
“I couldn’t get to sleep,” said Minks. “It was very late when I finally got to sleep after seeing it, especially in this neighborhood.”
Minks says the area has been pretty quiet since she moved to the neighborhood one year ago.
“The craziest thing that happens, is a dog on the loose,” said Minks.
She believes more people are going to be more open to talk to their neighbors after an incident like this.
“And get to know them so that way they can really see if something’s going on and maybe something like this can be prevented in the future,” said Minks.
Nate Wolff is the alderperson for the district. He was at the scene and touched on the importance of mental health.
“We need to learn the signs of people in crisis and help them out when we can,” said Wolff.
Another alert was sent at 8:22 p.m., informing residents that the situation was resolved.
Residents in Appleton received a notification on their phones at approximately 8:11 p.m., telling them to stay inside and away from windows.
Another alert was sent at 8:22 p.m., informing residents that the situation was resolved.
“There’s a new number. It’s 311 for people in crisis,” said Wolff. “We can get through anything that you’re going through together. You’re never alone.”
By Saturday morning, the crime scene tape was down in the area. FOX 11 reached out to the Appleton Police Department, but received no response as of Saturday.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice says they’re not releasing any more details, as the investigation is ongoing.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
The involved officers from the Appleton police department have been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
