State police identify man killed in fiery crash on I-91 South in East Windsor

EAST WINDSOR, Conn. (WTNH) — A fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer closed down parts of I-91 Southbound in East Windsor on Sunday evening.

Troopers responded to the scene at 11:30 p.m. Sunday after hearing reports of a crash involving a tractor-trailer on I-91 South.

State police said one vehicle was traveling on I-91 Southbound just before exit 44 while the tractor-trailer was traveling in the same direction.

The vehicle made contact with the tractor-trailer in the right lane, police said, which subsequently caused a fire to engulf both vehicles.

The vehicle came to an uncontrolled rest facing southwest in the gore of the exit 44 off-ramp, and the tractor-trailer came to a final stop facing southwest in the right lane of the highway and also in the gore area of the same off-ramp, troopers said.

The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the tractor-trailer was transported to the Hartford Hospital for minor injuries, according to state police.

On Wednesday, state police identified the victim as 19-year-old Owen Contreras of North Granby.

The highway was closed for an extended amount of time between exits 44 and 42 but it has since been reopened. Authorities said the Exit 44 ramp is still closed, however.

Officials are asking that any witnesses to the collision contact Trooper Keith Dorsey via email at keith.dorsey@ct.gov.
