SEMO Football holds Media Day, anticipation for season building

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Southeast Missouri State football team held its annual Media Day at the Show Me Center on Sunday.

Senior running back Geno Hess is coming off two consecutive First Team All-OVC seasons. He said the key to his success has been sticking to the process.

It’s being able to just fall in love with the grind and fall in love with the process,” he said. “As a freshman, you want things to happen right away. You’ve just got to let everything marinate over time and just work and it’s going to happen.”

Despite getting picked to finish second in the Ohio Valley Conference in the preseason poll, there is still a question as to who will be the starting quarterback once the season begins on September 3.

The QB competition is heating up between last year’s starter CJ Ogbonna and Central Methodist University transfer Paxton DeLaurent, but DeLaurent said it is a friendly competition.

“Me and CJ are like best buddies,” he said. “We’re just learning from each other, so I’ve been really grateful for that relationship between us.”

The Redhawks begin the season with two consecutive road games at Iowa State and Southern Illinois, respectively. Their first home game will be September 17 vs Nicholls State.
