UPDATE: Man killed in I-79 crash that closed traffic Sunday identified

UPDATE AUG. 15 10 A.M.: Monongalia County Sheriffs Deputies have released the name of the man who died in the crash on I-79 Southbound Sunday afternoon.

Deputies say Charles Delaney, 68, of St. Albans, who was the driver of the pickup that crashed, was killed. Deputies believe that Delaney lost control of the truck and swerved across both southbound lanes several times before he crashed into the rock face on the west side of the highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene.


ORIGINAL AUG. 14 3:35 P.M.: CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — One person was killed in a crash on I-79 Southbound between mile marker 143 and 146 that also shut down traffic for several hours on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Monongalia 911 Communications Center, the accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. and involved one pickup truck and one fatality. Traffic was diverted through Smithtown Road while crews responded.

The Clinton District Volunteer Fire Department, Mon County Sheriff’s Department and Mon County EMS all responded.

The Monongalia County Emergency Management Agency also posted about the accident on its Facebook page.

There is still no word on the identity of the person who died, or the cause of the crash.
