55 pounds of cocaine worth $5 million found floating off Florida Keys

The Monroe County Sheriff’s department said on Sunday that it had seized 25 bricks of what was suspected to be cocaine in Key West.

Their release stated that authorities responded to Coconut Mallory Marina on Saturday at approximately 3:38 p.m. regarding narcotics found floating in the ocean.

The Key West Police Department was already present and spoke to the reporting person who stated he found the bale approximately 50 miles offshore.

There were 25 rectangle-shaped bricks in the bale. They were wrapped in green plastic with black XXX decals on each.

The estimated total weight was approximately 55 pounds. Multiple sources report that cocaine can be sold for as much as $200 per gram. There are 453.59 grams in a pound. Fifty-five pounds would represent 24,970 grams. If the suspected drugs were worth $200 a gram, that would be represent a seizure of $4,994,000 of contraband.

The bricks will be turned over to federal authorities.
