A Great Bend couple will go before the Great Bend City Council Monday, Aug. 15 to potentially amend zoning regulations to allow a dog kenneling business
in a residential neighborhood.
Larry and Jennifer Kurtz live at 5908 Broadway, which is zoned R-1,
single-family residential district.
Last year, the couple obtained a multiple animal permit from the city to
operate a kennel in order to board dogs for pet owners.
The zoning official received a complaint and provided notice to Great Bend that
current zoning regulations do not allow the operation of a kennel in R-1
districts. The city will not be allowed to renew the multiple animal permit
this year.
The only way a dog boarding operation may be operated in a residential zone is
if regulations are amended.
The city council will be asked if they want to approve the motion to initiate
an amendment to the zoning regulations and direct the city attorney to present
the amendments to the Planning Commission.
The city council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall.
