Teen girl shot in back in serious condition, CPD says
CHICAGO (WLS) -- Five people were shot, one fatally, on the city's South Side overnight Saturday, Chicago police said.
The search is on for the person accused of killing a 19-year-old woman and injuring four other young people in a shooting near 78th and Wood streets.
Officers responded to the 1800 block of West 78th Street in the city's Gresham neighborhood at about 12:20 a.m. after a call of multiple shots fired, police said.
"It was so many bullets. It was over 100 something bullets," said niehgbor Antonio Gill.
Police say Tacara Tunstall, 19, was shot three times and died from her injuries. A 17-year-old girl was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her back, and three young men were also shot, ranging from 17 to 19 years old. Two of them were shot in the arm and the other in the torso. Each were last listed in fair condition.
"When the police came, all the neighbors came out and there was two little girls. One was like critically injured and the other she got shot in like the leg, but it took the law enforcement so long to pick the girl up," Gill said.
Witnesses said there were large groups of people gathered on this street when the suspected gunman allegedly drove by and shot out of a vehicle at the teens.
That's the type of violence the people living nearby are growing tired of and say they need help to solve.
"We need front and center help. If you're not gonna be on the front line, then you're not helping," Gill added.
Other details surrounding the shooting are still unclear, but police believe the offender may have been shooting from a vehicle.
Saint Sabina priest and community leader Father Michael Pfleger is now offering a $10,000 reward for information that could lead to an arrest.
"When do we decide that this is not the way we handle anger, when does this become a reality. I don't know," Pfleger said. "It's sad. We need help in the community."
No one has been arrested as Area Two detectives try to sort through the shooting.
