KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) - The Vietnam War was a very turbulent time in the history of the United States. From being an extremely controversial conflict, to the poor response of some Americans when the military members returned home. The war took its toll on those who fought so bravely.

But during times like the Nebraska Vietnam Veterans Reunion, troops who fought in that war had a chance to talk with people from all over the state who experienced some of the same things they did.

The reunion runs Thursday through Sunday morning. The four-day event highlights several aspects of the war, one being nurses who cared for the wounded during the fighting.

There was also a time for spouses of the veterans to gather together.

Overall, one veteran says the event can be therapeutic.

“They don’t realize it but I think it’s for counseling even,” Stan Brodine said. “We have so much in common that we don’t have to talk about it, but we know we have something in common. It’s just the moral support, and it’s for our spouses too because they have to live with us. So if it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be the people we are now.”

The reunion lines up with the time The Wall That Heals spends in Kearney, which is set to close at 2 p.m. Sunday.
