VERMONT STATE POLICE SAY... 30-YEAR-OLD SERGEANT - SIMON BOMBARD... A 7 YEAR VETERAN OF THE BURLINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT-- FIRED HIS HANDGUN IN THE INCIDENT. THIS HAPPENED AROUND 3PM SATURDAY...ON MANHATTAN DRIVE. ACCORDING TO POLICE... WHEN THEY ARRIVED... THEY FOUND 20-YEAR- OLD - DAVID JOHNSON IN DISTRESS, CARRYING A LARGE KITCHEN KNIFE. OFFICIALS KNEW JOHNSON FROM PREVIOUS INTERACTIONS... AND ATTEMPTED TO DE-ESCALATE THE SITUATION. VERMONT STATE POLICE SAY JOHNSON CHARGED AT ONE OF THE OFFICERS, WITH THE KNIFE IN HIS HAND. THAT'S WHEN POLICE SAY... SERGEANT BOMBARD FIRED HIS GUN... SHOOTING JOHNSON IN THE LEG. JOHNSON WAS HANDCUFFED AND TAKEN TO THE HOSPITAL. POLICE ALSO TELL US SEVERAL BULLETS HIT TWO CARS... THAT HAD PEOPLE INSIDE AT THE TIME. ONE PERSON WAS ALSO TAKEN HOSPITAL DUE TO INJURIES FROM SHATTERED GLASS. SERGEANT BOMBARD HAS BEEN PLACED ON ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE - WHICH IS STANDAR

The incident happened around 3 p.m. on Manhattan Drive

Vermont State Police have identified the Burlington police officer who shot someone in the Queen City on Saturday afternoon.VSP said Sgt. Simon Bombard, 30, fired his handgun in the incident that happened around 3 p.m. Saturday on Manhattan Drive.Officials said when Burlington police responded to the area they found David Johnson, 20, in distress, carrying a large kitchen knife.First responders said they knew Johnson from previous interactions and attempted to de-escalate the situation.VSP said Johnson charged at one of the officers with the knife in his hand. That's when Sgt. Bombard allegedly fired his gun, shooting Johnson in the leg.Johnson was taken to the hospital where he's being treated for a non life-threatening injury.Sgt. Bombard has been placed on administrative leave, per the police department's policy. VSP said Sgt. Bombard is a 7-year veteran of the Burlington Police Dept. and was promoted to sergeant in January 2021. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
