Iowans to build a house in just 9 days at the Iowa State Fair
Habitat for Humanity's on-site home build has returned to the Iowa State Fair. They've been working hard on a new home for a Des Moines family since the fair began. It's the first home build they've done on the fairgrounds since 2005.
Director of construction services, Les Stohs, says the 40 volunteers a day spread out over two four-hour shifts are what make it possible.
"It takes a lot of people to get the job done so we couldn't do it without our volunteers for sure," Stohs said.
Iowans spend their fair time sawing siding and making room for a new neighbor.
"It's the best feeling in the world," volunteer Abbey Barrow said. "Being able to provide families, our neighbors with safe, stable places to live is the most important thing we can do as a community."
After the fair, it will be moved in the middle of the night just a few blocks west of the fairgrounds where a single mother and her disabled son will be waiting to turn the house into a home.
