NARRAGANSETT, R.I. (WLNE) — The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management announced Saturday that a Narragansett beach will be closed on the weekdays due to lack of staffing.

Environment officials said starting Monday, Scarborough South State Beach will only be open on the weekends until Labor Day.

The change is due to, “a shrinking summertime labor force with lifeguards, rangers, and facility attendants returning to college and high school.”

Seasonal staff will work at Scarborough North to ensure full staff coverage.

All beach facilities will close for the beach season the day after Sept. 5.

This isn’t new, for several years DEM has closed Scarborough South on weekdays in late-August.
