NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The Department of Education will bring 82 teachers who were suspended without pay pending an investigation into whether they used fake COVID-19 vaccination cards back on the payroll.

The DOE suspended the teachers on April 25 after their names were discovered in the records of a Long Island pediatric center that allegedly sold fake vaccine cards.

The fake cards were ostensibly used to avoid the city’s vaccine mandate for municipal employees.

The department filed a lawsuit last month to keep the teachers accused of fraud suspended without pay after the United Federation of Teachers, the union that represents New York City educators, argued the teachers shouldn’t be punished before the investigation is complete.

Last week, the DOE distributed a memo announcing the suspect teachers will go back on the payroll Sept. 6 — the first day of classes.

The teachers won’t be allowed to return to the classroom, but instead will spend all day at an isolated holding area while the investigation is carried out.

The UFT told 1010 WINS negotiators are currently addressing the issue of backpay.
