Taxi driver beaten to death by passengers who attempted to rob him in Queens

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A yellow cab driver is dead after he was beaten by passengers who tried to rob him in Queens early Saturday, authorities said.

Around 6:30 a.m., police responded to an assault in progress at Beach 54th Street and Arverne Boulevard. Officers found the 52-year-old driver lying in the road with trauma to his head, officials said.

The victim was taken to St. John’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A spokesperson for the NYPD said the driver was operating a New York City taxi minivan with multiple passengers when they attempted to rob him as he dropped them off.

The driver chased after them but the passengers hit him, causing him to fall and strike his head, according to the spokesperson.

No arrests have been made and the identity of the taxi driver has yet to be released.
