Man dies after crawling into garbage chute of Brooklyn apartment building

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man is dead after going into the trash compactor of a Brooklyn apartment building Friday in an incident captured on surveillance video.

The video shows the man, accompanied by two other people, opening the door of the trash compactor and crawling into the small space meant for dumping trash bags, struggling to wedge himself in.

Both the man and woman who he was with stood by, watching him go in feet first. After he gets in, the pair look down the chute for about 30 seconds. The other man attempts to go in at one point but only puts his upper body inside.

Just after 4 a.m., police said the man was found dead in the incinerator in the basement of the building on Gates Avenue in Bed-Stuy. His remains were removed later in the morning.

No criminality is suspected, according to authorities. Police think the victim, who is in his 50s, was attempting to grab something from the compactor.
