This post has been updated to include a clarification from Café Grumpy.

A California company has expanded a July recall of nutritional drinks, creamers and other beverages because they may be contaminated by the organisms cronobacter sakazakii and clostridium botulinum.

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the recall expansion adds more brands and more lot codes to the July 28 recall by Lyons Magnus.

Infection from cronobacter sakazakii, the FDA said, is rare.

“The common symptoms of illness could include fever, vomiting and urinary tract infection. However, vulnerable and immunocompromised populations may be more susceptible to infection.”

Clostridium botulinum causes a severe form of food poisoning. “It can begin from six hours to two weeks after eating food that contains the toxin. Symptoms may include double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, and muscle weakness. Botulism poisoning can cause respiratory paralysis, resulting in death, unless assistance with breathing (mechanical ventilation) is provided.”

The FDA said, “Root cause analysis indicates that the products did not meet commercial sterility specifications.”

The products were distributed beginning in April 2021. Anyone who has any of the recalled items are encouraged to dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.

Some of the newly added items are Lyons Barista Style sweet cream frappé base, almond non-dairy beverage, coconut non-dairy beverage, oat non-dairy beverage and soy non-dairy beverage; Lyons Ready Care no sugar added high calorie high protein nutritional drink in vanilla, plant-based protein shakes in vanilla and chocolate and thickened dairy drinks; Tone It Up plant-based protein shakes; oat milk and pea milk from Uproot; and Organic Valley low fat milk and chocolate milk.

Regarding the brand Café Grumpy, that company said it stopped working with Lyons Magnus in May 2021. The current recall applies only to Café Grumpy products with any of these Lot Codes printed on the package: Lot 4211 Best By 8/27/22 and Lot 5211 Best By 8/28/22. “Current ready-to-drink cold brew with best-by dates of Aug. 20 and Aug. 21, 2023, are not affected” by the recall.

The previous recall included products from the brands Aloha, Oatly, Rejuvenate and Glucerna.
