BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - A downtown shooting early Saturday morning has left two people wounded. Burlington Police say they were called to the scene on Main Street just before 1:30 am Saturday. According to Burlington Police, two men were shot and transported to UVM Medical Center with non life threatening injuries. Witnesses told Police the suspected shooter possibly fled towards Lawson Lane, but Police were unable to locate anyone. This incident marks the 20th gunfire incident of the year in Burlington.

This early Saturday morning incident brought a request from acting Burlington Police Chief Jon Murad to request additional State Police coverage on the streets of Burlington Saturday night and Sunday. A group of ten State Troopers called “The Critical Action Team” are patrolling the downtown core of Burlington.

“This morning Burlington’s Acting Chief reached out to the director of the VSP COL Birmingham and asked whether VSP would be able to provide some additional resources in the form of troopers who could come into the city,” said Adam Silverman, State Police Spokesperson.

The State Police came in response to Burlington’s 20th shooting incident that took place early Saturday morning, and will be on foot and will provide a high visibility presence downtown.

“We are here to provide that extra staffing during those critical overnight hours, the rough schedule is troops on the ground from about 10 PM to 2 AM when the bars close,” according to Silverman.

The troopers however will have a limited mission, they will not respond to routine calls or enforce minor infractions.
