College student looking to rebuild after thief steals her car, leading to police chase crash
The victim of a car theft in Jeffersontown said Friday she was shocked to see her car turn up involved in a southern Indiana police chase that ended in Floyd County. Haley Hutchins is a full-time college student and works full-time as well, saying she bought her black 2017 Ford focus when she was 18 and had it paid off by her 21st birthday, which was this year, but now she believes her hard work was in vain. Hutchins said her car was stolen from in front of the Subway on Blankenbaker Parkway on Aug. 3, while she was inside getting lunch. "You don't have to be a jerk at the same time, like my why flip me off," Hutchins said. "Like that's such an under-the-belt thing to do."The suspect's criminal joy ride came to an end Friday afternoon thanks to police and WLKY Chopper HD. "I got on the WLKY Facebook page and I was like, there it was," Hutchins said. "It's like holy crap, there's cop cars everywhere and it's flipped over on the side of the road. My belongings are over the grassy area. Like, when you zoomed in from the helicopter stuff, like, I saw some of my belongings just laying there in the grass it's just heartbreaking. I was shocked. You never think that something like that would happen."Harrison County Sheriff's Department has identified the driver as Bryan Mays. They said he had two active felony warrants out of Kentucky.Police said Mays fled from a Walmart parking lot in Corydon onto Highway 135 and then onto I-64. Detectives with the Criminal Interdiction Unit and HCSD deputies identified the stolen vehicle.Harrison County dispatchers made contact with the Floyd County Sheriff's Department to issue a stop stick. Police said Mays did not stop and then sideswiped another vehicle on I-64.They said that Mays' vehicle rolled several times and that people in the other vehicle had minor injuries. The victims were transported to UofL Hospital to be treated for their injuries. Mays told police he used fentanyl before the pursuit. Now Hutchins is without a car and most of her belongings. While she said she knows she cannot change what happens, there is one thing she hopes for. "Just to know that if he feels bad and he says sorry like that would make me feel a little bit better just because when you feel so hopeless I feel like that can definitely help lift my spirits a little bit," Hutchins said. Hutchins started a GoFundMe to help finance a new car, saying her car also had her rent money and other important documents. You can find it by clicking on this link.
