Police in Cherokee County arrested a man suspected of stealing a U-Haul after a chase that started in North Carolina, according to Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller.
Joseph Houston is charged with failure to stop for blue light and grand larceny over $10,000.
Mueller said the chase started in Mecklenburg County. He said police in Lowell, North Carolina, and Bessemer City, North Carolina, tried to stop the U-Haul with stop sticks, but were unsuccessful.
Mueller said at one point Houston made a move that indicated to police that he might run them over. He said an officer fired two shots at the U-Haul. He said no injuries were reported in the shooting.
According to Mueller, as the chase entered South Carolina stop sticks were placed at mile marker 102 on Interstate-85 South, but Houston got by them. He said stop sticks at mile marker 96 punctured the right front tire of the U-Haul.
Houston was taken into custody at mile marker 91 without incident.
Interstate-85 in North Carolina was shut down for several hours Friday evening.
WYFF News 4 had a crew heading north on Interstate-85 as traffic came to a standstill.
It’s an endless wait," Peter Roberts said as he was stuck in traffic. "Google maps said 21 minutes ago like an hour ago.”
Roberts was with his wife traveling back to New York.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation said a crash closed I-85 near Exit 2, which is Battleground Road near Kings Mountain.
"We all slowed down," Mary Beth Stefurak said. "Then we came to a complete stop. We stopped, then the car behind us hit us, then it was just a chain reaction."
Stefurak said she was traveling from New Jersey to Clemson, when she was involved in one of several accidents.
Another man involved in the same crash, said he witnessed helicopters landing near the site of another crash nearby on Interstate-85.
"There were three helicopters that came in," Mike Long said. "If they had a fourth they said they would’ve brought a fourth one in. Everyone that was involved in this particular accident here, we’ve all pulled together, we’ve all met each other and talked about this situation. Everyone is parting friends. There’s no animosity at all. One couple is riding with another couple because their car wasn’t damaged much.”
Video from the South Carolina DOT also showed traffic on Interstate-85 South at a standstill in South Carolina Friday night.
