MOREHEAD, Ky. (FOX 56) – With classes starting Monday, Aug. 15, at Morehead State University, students and school officials alike are gearing up for what is a historic year for the school.
“It’s historic because we are starting our 135th year of educating students right on the side of this mountain,” said MSU’s President Dr. Jay Morgan. “It is also historic because we are celebrating 100 years of public support as a state supported university.”
After more than two years impacted by COVID-19, Morgan said it is nice to finally have a relatively normal school year.
“Over the past two years, we’ve welcomed students back only seeing their eyes,” Morgan said. “So it’s good to see smiles on campus both literally and figuratively. We are really feel like we are poised to have a great year at MSU.”
Over the course of the last few days, an estimated 2,700 first year students began moving into their dorm on campus and there are some definite nerves for this next chapter in life.
“I’m not really excited, I would say more scared,” said Freshman Dylan Jones. “Excited but not like as excited as I should be I guess.”
With the nerves, there is an equal amount of excitement for members of the student body from the remainder of the over 9,000 member student body.
“Being an elementary education major, I’m hoping to be able and go out into the schools finally cause I was supposed to go out first starting, that is one of the main reasons I cam to Morehead,” Junior Savanah Bellman said.
Parents too have their thoughts on sending their kids off to school once again.
“It is very emotional I guess,” parent Leslie Jones said. “He’s not going to be home. It is just awkward I don’t know how to explain it. It’s just kind of emotional I reckon. I am excited for his new adventure, I am excited for him to do something different.”
Regardless of what obstacles may come about this school year, students can expect to have a support system unlike any other around them.
“Well with everything that is happening, I feel like it has brought us a lot closer together and it has shown that we are that close community and that we do support each other no matter what the circumstances,” Bellman said.
