A new bronze cow at the Iowa State Fair memorializes a past sculptor
People from all over the country come to the Iowa State Fair to see the butter cow.
Above the gawkers, a banner celebrating past butter cow artists.
But this year, a new bronze cow outside of the Ag Building tells the story of a long-time sculptor.
"We put it right in front of the Ag Building where the butter cow is housed and where Duffy carved there for more than 40 years," said Gary Slater, Iowa State Fair CEO.
It's a tribute to Duffy Lyon, the butter cow creator for more than four decades.
"I helped her two years to work on the butter cow and a couple sculptures," said her niece, Amy Paulsen.
Paulsen remembers assembling the cow in the cooler with her Aunt Duffy. She misses their time spent together at the fair.
"I love it," she said. "I miss her, ya know, and it just makes it so it doesn't forget her."
The statue — one of three identical bronze pieces. One in Lyon's hometown of Toledo. The second in front of the Iowa State Department of Dairy Sciences. The third is here at the Iowa State Fair with a plaque where fairgoers can read about Lyon's legacy and take a picture with a more permanent piece of her artwork.
"I think it's really good ya know," Paulsen said. "Still keeps her in their memories and stuff and ours."
You can find Lyon's statue just outside the entrance to the actual butter cow.
The plaque where you can read about Duffy's history at the fair is along the sidewalk.
