SIMS, N.C. (WNCN) – An 11-year-veteran of the North Carolina Department of Transportation was fatally killed while on the job Friday after being hit while on the side of the highway, officials said.

Anna Bradshaw, 60, was cleaning up debris on a shoulder of U.S. 264 Alternate in Wilson County when she was hit, the NCDOT said.

“Anna was a dedicated and hard-working employee in the Wilson County maintenance office and will be missed by her NCDOT family,” NCDOT said in a statement to CBS 17. “This is a tragic reminder of how our employees and contractors risk their lives every day serving the public.”

The driver got out of the car and spoke with another DOT worker at the scene and said he hadn’t seen Bradshaw, but left when the worker went to call for help, according to patrol Trooper Jordan Lamm.

On Saturday, the NCSHP announced that they located the vehicle that hit Bradshaw and arrested the driver. Friday night, Jamari Marquis Powell, 31, of Bailey was charged with felony hit and run. Powell was taken to the Wilson County Jail and placed under a $20,000 secured bond.
