New traffic camera video shows pursuit of suspect in FBI breach attempt
New details about the attack on the FBI center in Cincinnati are emerging as video from traffic cameras that caught parts of the pursuit are released.
Investigators said Ricky Shiffer was showing an AR-15-style weapon as he tried to get into the FBI center. The commotion set off alarms at inside the FBI center, armed agents came running and Shiffer took off.
The new video from ODOT, obtained by a public records request, shows the suspect’s white Crown Victoria on I-71 headed northbound from the Kenwood area.
At first, one police cruiser is following Shiffer. By the time he exits the interstate nearly 30 miles later, there is a long line of police vehicles behind him.
Shiffer crashed in a remote area near acres of cornfields.
“He’s wrecked his car and he’s shooting at officers,” a dispatcher warned police in pursuit.
After a standoff that lasted several hours police tried to arrest Shiffer.
“Officers tried to move in using less lethal tactics to take the suspect into custody, the suspect then raised his firearm toward law enforcement and that’s when shots were fired at the suspect,” said an Ohio State Patrol spokesman.
Shiffer was killed by officers.
The incident began about 35 miles away at the FBI center.
Sources said Shiffer was using a nail gun to try to break through the bulletproof glass.
Schiffer seems to confirm the effort in a social media post where he writes, “Well, I thought I had a way through bulletproof glass, and I didn’t.”
