Statewide 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign announced for remainder of summer
The governor's Traffic Safety Committee announced a statewide "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign on Friday.
It comes in the wake of a recent spike of impaired driving crashes, including one that nearly killed Suffolk County Police Officer Timothy Thrane last year when he was hit by an impaired driver in a chain reaction crash on the William Floyd Parkway.
Even though he has no memory of the crash, Thrane says he knew the driver who hit him was impaired.
"We deal with so many drunk drivers on a professional basis that even when I could barely speak yet…it was good chance it was drugs or alcohol," Thrane says.
Officials will be stepping up patrols for the remainder of the summer.
The campaign starts next Friday and runs through Sept. 5.
