ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — A portion of South Avenue (Route 123) in Attleboro was shut down Friday evening as emergency crews responded to a deadly crash.

Attleboro Police Chief Kyle Heagney tells 12 News a man in his mid-50s was killed in the single-vehicle crash.

His passenger, a man in his mid-30s, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with serious trauma injuries, according to Heagney.

Attleboro Fire Chief Scott Lachance said they were called to the scene around 5:20 p.m. and arrived to find the vehicle engulfed in flames.

The vehicle had hit a tree, Lachance said, and bystanders had already pulled the passenger out.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld pending family notification.

The crash remains under investigation.
