RENO COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) - Update: The Reno County Sheriff’s Office said a man died in a Friday afternoon vehicle fire near Cheney Reservoir. At about 2:30 p.m., the sheriff’s office said, deputes responded to the area of the 2000 block of east Parallel Road and the report of a vehicle going in and out of the ditch.

“While deputies were responding to the scene, dispatch advised that the vehicle was stuck in the ditch and a female passenger was able to get out of the car but the driver was trying to get the vehicle out of the ditch. The vehicle then caught fire while the driver was still inside, the sheriff’s office said. “At this time, others who were on scene attempted to pull the driver out of the car but they were unable to get him out.”

The sheriff’s office said the vehicle was fully involved after an explosion. A passerby was injured trying to get the driver out of the vehicle.

First responders found one person dead at the scene of a car fire that led to a grass fire in Reno County. The fire was reported about 2:30 p.m. Friday at Riverview Drive and Parallel Road, near Cheney Reservoir.

At the scene, crews have the area blocked off in the early stages of the investigation into what led up to the car fire.
