The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about three tourists that tied up an alligator and captured it.
According to officials, BCSO responded to a call at Sandcastles by the Sea, a rental property located off of Folly Field Road on Hilton Head Island after a concerned resident said they observed three tourists, two 16-year-olds and a 19-year-old, trying to trap an alligator at a pond in the area, according to reports.
Deputies received the call around 12 p.m., on Aug. 4. When they arrived, according to officials, they found an alligator, about five feet long, tied with a cord to a fence.
Though it was tied to the fence, deputies said the alligator was still submerged in water; they said it appeared the alligator had the cord around its neck and had rolled up into the cord while trying to break free.
One of the teens told deputies they had wrangled the alligator by enticing it to shore and then slipping the cord around its head. Officials claim their reasoning was simple: boredom.
Deputies say they were able to cut the cord and free the alligator.
The South Carolina Department of Resources responded and assumed the investigation; the specific charges are unclear.
There are no further details to release at this time.
