Kin Shriner Recalls Scott and Dominique’s Tragic Love Story on GH

Tags:

The reveal that Cody Bell is actually Dominique Stanton’s son sparked memories for longtime GENERAL HOSPITAL fans of the tragic love story between Dominique and Scott on the soap in the early ‘90s. Dominique was ultimately diagnosed with a fatal brain tumor and died in Scott’s arms after hearing the heartbeat of their child that Lucy was carrying as a surrogate. Sadly, she didn’t live long enough to see Serena’s birth.

“Shell Danielson (ex-Dominique) wanted to leave, so they decided to kill her off, which gave me the six months of heavy-duty story with her dying and all that stuff” Kin Shriner (Scott) recalled in a recent issue of Soap Opera Digest

However, that wasn’t what the writers originally had planned for the couple, just what they wrote to accommodate the actress’ exit. And just as the writers and producers had to pivot, so did Shriner. “She became the love of Scotty’s life, only for him to find out she’s not going to make it and all you can do is say, ‘Okay, we’ll play it to the hilt!’” the actor explained. “It wasn’t how I wanted it to go. I did not want the love of Scotty’s life to die in his arms. That’s not my idea of a good time!”

And while fans who remember that powerful storyline praise the writing and performances, Shriner admitted that he’s not really a fan of such drama himself. “My whole game is fun and banter,” he confided. “I don’t like to play heavy-duty emotional scenes, you know? I think my strong suit has always been screwball comedy and keeping it light.”

But anyone who has watched Shriner since his debut on GH 45 years ago knows that the actor is as adept at drama as he is at comedy. And he’s got a legion of loyal fans and four Daytime Emmy Award nominations to prove it!
