Cape Girardeau Fire Department interviewing for next fire inspector

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Cape Girardeau Fire Department interviewed fire inspector candidates this week. Three current firefighters interviewed for the position on Wednesday.

The fire inspector is tasked with going to businesses in the community and making sure everything is up to fire code, exits are not blocked, alarms panels work, and smoke detectors work.

Fire Chief Randy Morris says it is one of the less glamorous jobs in the fire department, but a very important one.

“It’s not actually hopping on the fire truck and going out and responding to emergencies, but this is a lot more on the preventative side and if we can prevent a catastrophic disaster from happening whether it be a high loss of life or a large economic loss in the community, we want to prevent that,” said Chief Morris. “Our fire inspector here in the city of Cape Girardeau is tasked with actually doing the inspections out in the community. So they get into a lot of our businesses, a lot of our commercial style buildings. And they actually go through and have a checklist and make sure that everything is up to fire code. It’s a safety measure, a measure we take to make sure that exits are not blocked, sprinkler systems are in operation, alarm panels are working, smoke detectors are working.”
