Macon, Ga. (WGXA) -- A Macon man says he and his friend were targeted and now he's speaking exclusively with WGXA.

"We got asked to help someone jump their car off."

That's Jerome Alexander and, he says, on Tuesday while, they were lending a helping hand, they ended up being targeted.

"A white dude pull on the street and was just like 'y'all n**** stop stealing my copper.'"

Alexander says they proceeded to finish helping a guy jump his car off and things turned violent.

"Five minutes into jumping the car off all we hear is gunshots."

Shots that Alexander says caused him and his friends to try and get to safety.

"The whole time getting in the car we ducking and dodging."

I asked alexander what he thinks led to them being shot at.

"Hate, it got to be the skin color I'm going to say. He was getting off so many shots, we're trying to shoot. I'm not going to sit here and lie, we're trying to shoot, we couldn't."

I asked the Bibb Sheriff's Office if they believe this is a hate crime and here's what Sergeant Linda Howard had to say.

"We have no evidence that this is a hate crime."

Howard says while the incident ended at Walmart, there was not a shooting at Walmart. She says as of today, no arrests have been made.

"They were detained but no one was arrested."

Howard says firearms were recovered and they were used prior to the crash. Howard says there has been a misconception on social media that claims the Sheriff's Office is hiding information.

"We don't want to say that this person is guilty or that person is guilty without knowing who it is without knowing who our primary aggressor is. We want to know exactly the facts."

Now we've made several attempts to get the incident report and we're still waiting.
