Suspicious 'pipes with wires' removed from downtown Louisville, FBI investigating
I’M STEPHON DINGLE AND I’M JENNIFER BAILEYS. A SUSPICIOUS ITEM WAS FOUND UNDER A BUS STOP BENCH AT THE CORNER OF FIFTH AND JEFFERSON STREETS THIS MORNING. THAT’S RIGHT AFTER SEVERAL HOURS, THE BOMB SQUAD DEEMED IT SAFE ENOUGH TO BE MOVED. AND TONIGHT, THE FBI HAS CUSTODY OF THAT SUSPICIOUS ITEM OUR MARK VANDERHOFF HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THIS STORY ALL DAY. HE JOINS US LIVE FROM DOWNTOWN WHERE THAT DEVICE WAS ACTUALLY FOUND. MARK, WHAT EXACTLY WERE THEY LOOKING AT? WELL, JENNIFER, STEFON, POLICE AREN’T GIVING OUT A LOT OF DETAILS ABOUT THIS SUSPICIOUS ITEM. BUT WE HAD WLKY CHOPPER IN THE AIR WITH A VIEW OF THIS BUS STOP WHERE YOU COULD SEE WHITE PVC PIPES. AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT POLICE WERE HERE FOR MORE THAN 5 HOURS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT JUST HOW DANGEROUS IT REALLY WAS. WE’RE ACTUALLY FROM OHIO. WE’RE HERE FOR A THE BOURBON TRAIL JUST ON A LITTLE WEEKEND VACATION AND NOTICED THIS WAS GOING ON A LITTLE SCARY. MICHAEL BLUMENAUER AND HIS FAMILY WERE HEADED OUT FOR THE DAY WHEN THEY CAME UPON THIS SCENE. JEFFERSON STREET CLOSED FROM THIRD TO SIXTH STREET. LAPD BOMBS, SQUAD TRUCK AND POLICE CARS EVERYWHERE. WE’VE BEEN WORKING THE LAST FEW HOURS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE FBI AND THE ATF TO DETERMINE WHETHER OR NOT IT IS, IN FACT, EXPLOSIVE DEVICE. HERE’S A VIEW FROM WLKY CHOPPER HD OF WHAT POLICE CALLED A SUSPICIOUS DEVICE. SEVERAL WHITE PVC PIPES AT A BUS STOP AT FIFTH AND JEFFERSON STREETS, POLICE SIT IN A ROBOT TO INSPECT THE DEVICE. THEN IN OFFICER AND A BLAST SUIT. THEN OFFICERS IN HAZMAT SUITS. FINALLY, POLICE WERE ABLE TO REMOVE THE DEVICE. CHIEF ERIKA SHIELDS WAS ASKED WHO WAS THE TARGET? I’M NOT AT LIBERTY TO DISCUSS THAT. IT WAS TIME FOR 5 HOURS. WORKERS IN NEARBY BUILDINGS WERE FORCED TO SHELTER IN PLACE. WE APPRECIATE ALL OF THE PATIENCE OF THE COMMUNITY. I KNOW IT WAS LONG AND WE’RE THANKFUL THAT PEOPLE WERE SUPPORTIVE OF US ALLOWING TO DO WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO. SO THANK YOU. AT THE KENTUCKY INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION CENTER, A BUSINESS CONFERENCE WAS DELAYED. ONE GROUP OF CONVENTIONEERS WAS HEADED TO MELBOURNE. THE RESTAURANT RIGHT NEXT TO THE BUS STOP WHERE THE PIPES WERE LOCATED. WE CAME OUT TO THIS AND SO NOW WE’VE GOT TO FIND SOME ALTERNATIVE PLANS. DID YOU KNOW WHAT WAS HAPPENING? NO, WE DID NOT. WHAT DID YOU THINK? NOW THAT YOU KNOW, NOW THAT I KNOW, IT’S A LITTLE, LITTLE DIFFERENT. YOU KNOW, IT’S NOT SOMETHING YOU DON’T WALK INTO EVERY DAY. LUCKILY, NOBODY WAS INJURED IN THE DELAY. DIDN’T KEEP THE BLOOMING HOURS FROM THEIR TOURS. EVERYTHING’S STILL ON ON SCHEDULE. SO HOPEFULLY EVERYTHING GOES AS WELL AS PLANNED. NOW, CHIEF SHIELD SAYS THIS DEVICE WAS GOING TO GO SOME UNDERGO SOME ADDITIONAL TESTING. NO INFORMATION HAS BEEN RELEASED
