Why the U.S. power grid has become unreliable

The average American experienced just over eight hours of power outages in 2020, with their overall duration more than doubling in the prior five years. Beyond just inconvenience, blackouts cost the U.S. an estimated $150 billion every year. They can also be fatal, as recently seen during the 2021 outage in Texas. So why has the U.S. power grid become unreliable and can it be fixed?
