Police Inspector Regan Draheim said their mother was grateful the children were back home.

'She's very relieved, obviously, as any parent would be with their children being returned,' Insp Draheim told reporters.

'She's as relieved as anyone would be given the situation.'

Mr Carter's appearance was described as 'solid' by cops, who said he is around 175cm tall with a shaved head and full bushy beard with multiple face and body tattoos.

One of Mr Carter's face tattoos reads 'Why so serious?', a nod to Batman villain the Joker's catchphrase from the 2008 movie The Dark Knight.

He also has the face of the fictional character inked across his neck.

He took the children away in a white 2005 Nissan Patrol 4WD. The vehicle was last seen heading toward the Bruce Highway, Mackay
