(WFXR) — The 136th generation of Virginia state troopers is set to graduate from the Virginia State Police Training Academy and receive their diplomas on Friday.
According to Virginia State Police (VSP), the 18 new troopers will be presented with their diplomas during the commencement at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12 at the State Police Training Academy in Chesterfield County.
Law enforcement says the new troopers have had more than 1,300 classroom and field instruction hours in more than 100 different subjects since the 28 weeks of training began on Jan. 26.
The studied subjects include:
- Constitutional law
- Fair and impractical policing
- De-escalation techniques
- Strategies to assist people in a mental health crisis
- Emergency medical trauma care
- Public and community relations
“The 136th has completed one of the toughest law enforcement academies in the country and are now joining a long line of distinguished troopers,” Virginia State Police Superintendent Col. Gary T. Settle said.
VSP tells WFXR News that upon graduating, the new troopers will be sent to a new location for their individual duty assignments. Each trooper will spend an additional six weeks of training paired up with a field training officer while learning the new patrol area for their final phase of training.
“2022 marks the 90th anniversary of the Virginia State Police and these new troopers will forever be part of our valued history. We are proud to have them as part of the Virginia State Police family,” Settle said.
