Officials from New York State announced that the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance is making some additional resources available to help families in the Empire State who may be struggling with getting ready to send their kids back to school in the fall.

More than $44 million in federal pandemic funds are being allocated toward back-to-school and food expenses.

Hardworking New York families are still feeling the economic toll of the pandemic... As New Yorkers prepare to send their children back to school this fall, these one-time payments will help struggling families across the state pay for education supplies and other household expenses that may otherwise pose a burden on their household budget. This is yet another step we are taking to help lower costs of living for hardworking families hit hardest by the pandemic.
-Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York State

Starting on Friday, August 12, 2022, NYS OTDA will begin issuing payments to families and individuals. These payments will break down like this:

Families and Individuals who receive public assistance:

  • A one time patent of $214 will be issued to every recipient who has a child between the ages of 3 and 17.
  • An additional payment of $150 will be issued to households with children age 3 or younger to help with food and nutrition costs.

In all, officials expect that more than 200,000 New Yorkers will receive additional funds. With school quickly approaching and the cost of things skyrocketing due to inflation being at an all-time high, this will be a welcome boost to many who live in the Empire State.

This money is being made available from the Pandemic Emergency Assistance Fund that was running earlier this year and managed by NYS OTDA. The program was issuing additional food stamps and cash benefits to New Yorkers who qualified for assistance.

New York families should begin seeing these funds in their accounts any day.
