Joint Legislative Fiscal Committee tables process at request of AG's office, officials say

The New Hampshire attorney general's office will make changes to the claims process for people alleging abuse at a New Hampshire youth detention facility, officials said.The state created a $100 million settlement fund for victims of abuse at the Sununu Youth Services Center, formerly known as the Youth Development Center, but critics, who include many of the alleged victims, said it is not enough money and that the claims process is too much of a burden.The Joint Legislative Fiscal Committee voted on Wednesday to table the proposed process while more work is done by the attorney general’s office to address what some committee members called “serious bipartisan concerns raised over the course of the committee meeting.”Officials with the attorney general's office said they asked for the claims process to be tabled while they get a proper process in place."We appreciated the feedback from the committee members, remain focused on getting a process in place to help YDC victims, and look forward to resubmitting our documents with updates," Mike Garrity, spokesperson for the attorney general's office, said in a statement to WMUR. "We are confident that all deadlines can still be met if we receive approval at the next meeting."Gov. Chris Sununu signed into law the creation of the fund in May.Eleven former YDC employees have been charged with abuse or assault.
