RAPID CITY, S.D. — Five people have been indicted on federal charges following a February homicide on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
27-year-old Tyson White Plume is charged with second-degree murder and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence. The charges stem from a February 5, 2022 shooting that claimed the life of a juvenile female near Rockyford.
The other four defendants, 19-year-old Raymond White Plume, 42-year-old Sarah Stone, 41-year-old Jaimee Lewis, and 30-year-old Ivan White Plume (also known as Ivan White Butterfly) were charged with accessory after the fact to second-degree murder. Court documents allege the four assisted Tyson White Plume in covering up the killing.
While the name of the juvenile hasn’t been released by officials, Tyson White Plume was identified by the Oglala Sioux Tribe’s Department of Public Safety as being seen with 17-year-old Shayna Youngman Afraid Of His Horses before her February disappearance. Youngman Afraid Of His Horses was last seen in Fraggle Rock on February 3, and last communicated with her family on February 5. Her remains were found on February 11 north of Manderson.
All five pleaded not guilty to the charges. Tyson White Plume, Raymond White Plume, and Ivan White Plume were remanded to custody pending trial, while Stone and Lewis were released on a number of conditions.
The maximum penalty for second-degree murder and discharge of a firearm during a crime of violence is life in prison, while the penalty for accessory after the fact is 15 years.
A tentative trial date for all five has been set for October 4, 2022.
