The rancid odor released Wednesday by a parked chemical truck that caused concerns in Camden and Gloucester county continued to waft through neighborhoods on Thursday morning, though there is no danger to the public, officials said.
“The odor continues to linger throughout our area as well as throughout Camden County,” Cherry Hill police said at about 9 a.m. “As you venture out today, you will continue to smell the odor. You may smell the odor inside your home as well. We are aware of the odor; there is no need to report the odor.”
The odious fumes could be smelled in parts of Philadelphia on Thursday morning as well, 6abc.com.
The smell of rotten eggs became very noticeable around mid-afternoon on Wednesday and soon could be detected in Camden County due to a a gas leak coming from a tractor trailer parked at Travel Center Truck Stop on Berkley Road in East Greenwich Township, the Gloucester Township Office of Emergency Management said.
The first calls came into police departments in the area before 3 p.m.
At 3:27 p.m. officials found the location of the leak and later confirmed it was Lubrizol-1389 — Zinc alkyldithiophosphate — a nuisance chemical.
While extremely smelly, it poses no danger to public, officials said. People who come into contact with the chemical might experience eye and skin irritation.
The owners of the truck — who were not identified by authorities — later sent workers to remove the chemical from the tanker. The truck stop is just off of Exit 18 on Interstate 295.
Gloucester County officials advised people to stay inside and limit outdoor activities. Late Wednesday night, another gas leak from the truck led officials to call for a shelter in place for East Greenwich, Paulsboro, Gibbstown. The shelter in place was lifted about two hours later, the Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management said.
A woman who answered the phone at the Gloucester County Office of Emergency Management said Director Dennis McNulty and other officials were out in the field and not immediately available to speak.
